I was riveted to this memoir. The first part of the book where she writes about her childhood is so beautifully wrought, I was taken aback. Who knew? There's a dreamy, evocative quality that reminds me of Proust without the 800-word sentences. Mia Farrow is a great writer.

The dreamy quality dissipates as she writes of her life when she is older and show biz begins. You get a lot of inside scoop, that's for sure. I did not feel she was entirely truthful in presenting her character. I think she was intensely ambitious, particularly when it came to hooking up with powerful men, whereas she presents herself in romantic scenarios as somewhat passive. I don't know how she kept rationalizing staying with Woody Allen when he was so inappropriate with Dylan that she asked that he never have Dylan alone overnight. Then Mia stays with him for a few more years. That's nuts. But she had all these kids and no real financial security, except with Woody's movies. It seemed like the power of having Woody Allen in her life trumped her fears early on. I never walked in her shoes, though. She asks herself why she stayed with him,. (Clearly, she fooled around with other men when she was with Woody. Ronan is the image of Frank Sinatra.) The idea that he could be molesting one daughter while fooling around with his daughter's sister was too repugnant. I don't know.

So it's an exceptional read in the beginning of the memoir and fascinating from a voyeur's point of view in the rest.

Mia is really good at making her writing fun to read. This book was a fast read and very very interesting. I remember all the the things that she talks about from Frank to the disgusting Woody. I was a huge fan when she and Frank were married. I have read this book twice...once when it first came out and again when she announced that Ronan is not Woody's son but the biological son of Frank Sinatra which none of us should have been surprised by since he is the spit and image of his father Frank. Love this book.
I loved reading about an extraordinary woman who was strong and caring. Such dicipline and talent beyond the regular expectations. A loving Mother.
Mia Farrow has beautifully written this book. I am assuming she didn't use a ghost writer. The section of the book on her relationship with Woody Allen and his with her daughter is sometimes hard to read as you want to slap her for not acting on her feelings about Woody Allen before he injured her family so severely. She portrays her family as one big happy family except for the intrusion of Woody Allen, but she seems to live somewhat in a world of denial and dreams. My experience with adopted children is different than her portrayal. There are always problems for children who are adopted that are not faced by biological children, and having so many of her children in therapy would indicate that she is really sugarcoating the picture she paints of them. That being said, this is a well written book, and is an interesting look at a life that is different than most and very intriguing.
What a wonderful very emotional life experience. The truth, sharing and caring for other children that has become part of Mia's life. The sadness of always giving her best without acknowledgement. This Book is one of the best that I have ever read and could not put it down. thanks for sharing
I'm only about a third of the way through the book but must comment now. Mia is describing her wedding to Frank Sinatra and named some of the guests. She mentions Red Skelton who "had just shot his wife." What? ?? The old news stories say she accidentally shot herself when a gun discharged and Red wasn't even there. I may finish this book, but will now be taking everything with a big grain of salt.
Interesting read until the part about her life with Woody Allen. She seems like a bright, articulate woman. How she could put up with his behavior is beyond me. If he is 1/10 as amoral as he sounds in her account, he sounds like Hannibal Lecter's cousin. Kudos to Mia for surviving. I remember her from "Peyton Place" as a stunning young woman. She grew into a fierce one, as well.
This book was only slightly interesting. I gave it two stars because it was interesting to read about some of the people she knew. Typical Hollywood brat pack stuff. But I was disgusted with this woman after reading about Woody. I think she has a severe case of head-in-the-sand. The men she was with were/are self-centered a-holes. Then comes Woody Allen who has no interest in her extended family of several adopted children but she stays with him long enough to have a child with him, adopt even more children, only for him to abuse them mentally and verbally, molest one, and then seduce and run off with another? For f!#@ sake!
