Great story, engrossing from the get. The potentially clunky flashback form was handled deftly and gracefully, only adding to the narrative. The often shy, reticent and univerbal Sheriff Longmire ponders the past, invokes Shakespeare, bandies words with ghosts as he doggedly grinds through the latest befuddling mystery. The author creates several new and compelling characters, most notably Virgil White Buffalo, whom we hope to see reappear in future works. Wyoming itself becomes a major character, rendered vividly by Johnson as always. Am I anxiously looking forward to the next book in the series? I think was fine
While I am not a professional book reviewer for the Chronicle or anything, but I know what I like. And this Longmire series by Craig Johnson is just the best. In this one, I had the chance to go into Henry and Walt's history of their time in Vietnam. The story was much more complicated than the other Longmire books but was written so well that I was able to jump around without getting confused. What a great read.
LONGMIRE FOR PRESIDENT!
I was glad to return to Absaroka country and read the next installment in the life and times of Walt Longmire. This was quite a dark story—but that is what I like about this author—he does not gloss over ugly truths that rear their heads even in out-of-the-way places in Wyoming. And my favorite character still remains Henry Standing Bear a truer friend can not be found anywhere. In addition there is his so dry humor that cracks me up every time.........
Hi All, I have become a Longmire fan for some time now. I have all of the released DVD season, which I wish they would release more, Have liked them all. Am working on the books now. Am about to finish "Another Man's Moccasins". Would recommend the Longmire series to anyone liking this type of mystery. They keep pulling you along. The only thing I don't like is the vulgar language. You hear it day in & day out through life, I don't think you need it in situations like this. Otherwise, the stories are excellent. As mentioned, I would recommend anyone liking this type of story to look into the series. rlw
I love the Longmire TV series but the books are fabulous! There is much more detail and humor. They are written in the first person and I feel that I can get into the character's head more and that I really know the real Walt Longmire. I've read 5 of the books and they are different story lines than the TV shows which makes it seem like new episodes. I'm not suffering from Longmire withdrawals when I'm reading the books.
"Another Man's Moccasins" rates as a one-of-best-in series in my opinion. Author Craig Johnson does a skillful job of integrating Walt Longmire's soul-defining war experience with murder in Absaroka County. A secondary plot line tells the story of a Crow Indian man abused by life, but who importantly intersects with Longmire's investigation of the murder. This book as all the best bells and whistles that Johnson can bring to these Longmire stories and is a terrific read. Some knowledge of the man, his relationship with Henry Standing Bear and other secondary characters enriches the reading at the beginning, but the book is fine as a stand alone.
As an aside, I wish that the wit and inter-relationships that are so well detailed in these books by Johnson were carried over as well in the Netflix series. There are times when I'm viewing the latter that seems to be very little resemblance between the two..
Another great Johnson offering in the Longmire series.
A dead Vietnamese girl in Walt's County is unusual as none too many Vietnamese make it to Eastern Wyoming. Even more unusual is the decades old picture in her possession - of a young Marine named Walt Longmire.
Thus begins a double mystery as Johnson alternates between the young Marine investigator working a drug case on an army base and Sheriff Longmire trying to untangle the mystery of the young murder victim.
The prelude tale gives good background on present day Longmire in terms of showing his character and incidents that influenced the adult. A young Wyoming buddy special forces Henry Standing Bear is also in the earlier tale and pieces of their life-long friendship are introduced in this fourth book of the Series.
A gripping read with great characters and dialogue.
